Railway in Canada Overview

VIA Rail Canada Inc. was established for the purpose of operating national passenger rail services on behalf of the Government of Canada, offering both intercity and long-distance trains to communities across eight provinces — from Canada's west coast in British Columbia to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on the Atlantic. It is the objective of this national rail company to offer the Canadian passenger rail market a service that is reliable, efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly, meeting the needs of all Canadian passengers. VIA Rail operates over 475 trains per week across more than 400 stations.

VIA Rail was founded with the vision of connecting and uniting Canada's cities and people with safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly rail travel. Currently VIA Rail operates in eight provinces across Canada, with trains covering a distance of over 7,800 miles. The route network includes the unspoiled beauty of the Canadian Rockies, the dramatic landscapes of British Columbia, and the bustling metropolitan centers of the East and West coasts — from Union Station in Toronto to Quebec City and Halifax. The railway system in Canada is large and well-developed. It currently primarily transports freight — Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP) are the two major transcontinental freight trains operators in the country. VIA Rail, the federal Crown corporation, provides nationwide passenger train service. Note that on many shared tracks, freight trains have priority, which can occasionally affect passenger train schedules.

Railway Stations in Canada

In Canada, trains are one of the most popular means of transportation for travelers and local citizens alike. Regional train stations have been built to modern standards of comfort. Union Station in Toronto is the country's busiest train station, serving as the main hub for VIA Rail corridor trains, Amtrak trains connecting to Penn Station in New York, and commuter services. Major stations in Montréal, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Québec City also offer excellent facilities to ensure passengers have an enjoyable experience on board — including bicycle boxes, restaurants and snack bars, newspapers, ATMs, washrooms, telephones, business lounges, and wireless internet access.

VIA Rail Trains in Canada

Trains are one of the most convenient means of transportation in Canada, allowing you to travel from city to city while enjoying the majestic landscape en route. Rail Canada offers several distinct long-distance trains — each a canada rail vacation in its own right — as well as efficient commuter and corridor services.
The Canadian is VIA Rail's flagship transcontinental train, running 4,466 kilometers from Vancouver to Toronto in approximately 96 hours. It features the iconic Skyline car — a dome lounge car with panoramic windows for watching the Canadian Rockies roll by — as well as a dining car, Park car (the glass-domed observation car at the rear), sleeper cars, and a lounge car. This overnight train is one of the world's great train journeys, operating year-round with breathtaking seasonal scenery. During peak season (late June to mid-October), The Canadian runs three times per week; outside peak season, service frequency reduces.
The Ocean is a 22-hour overnight train connecting Montréal and Halifax, covering 1,346 kilometers through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia — passing fishing villages, coastal trails, and charming cities along the Atlantic seaboard.
The Skeena runs between Jasper and Prince George and Prince Rupert in British Columbia, while the Hudson Bay route connects Winnipeg to Churchill in remote northern Manitoba, crossing landscapes few travelers ever see. The Rocky Mountaineer is a separate luxury rail service (not operated by VIA Rail) offering world-class Canada rail vacations through the Canadian Rockies and British Columbia, with daylight-only travel so passengers never miss a view.

Canada Railway Map and Main Routes

Traveling by train is a convenient, affordable, and comfortable way to experience Canada — one of the world's great destinations for canada rail vacations. VIA Rail travels mostly through the southern part of the country, where the population is concentrated, but also ventures into some of the most remote and spectacular regions on the continent.

The Corridor is Canada's busiest passenger rail corridor, running between Québec City and Windsor via Montréal, Ottawa, and Toronto. This is where the majority of VIA Rail's commuter and intercity train traffic operates, with frequent daily departures connecting the country's major cities. Canada's capital Ottawa provides access to both south and north via VIA Rail express trains — you can reach Québec City or Toronto in just a couple of hours on fast, modern Ottawa corridor trains. Note that cell service and Wi-Fi availability may vary on remote sections outside the Corridor.
